NATURIST FELL WALKING

If you go up on the fells today, you could be in for a big surprise. You may bump into one of the increasing number of nudists who enjoy rambling or cycling in the Cumbrian countryside.

The number of naturists who find even nudist colonies too restricting is apparently on the increase in Cumbria according to the BBC programme Inside Out which discussed the issue. Presenter Chris Jackson talks to "free range" naturists who are letting it all hang out on Lake District fells instead of in traditional nudist camps. These naturists go equipped for their naturist rambles with just the bare necessities - boots, a small rucksack and sometimes a walking stick. Ruairidh Clarke has often hiked naked in the Lake District and has rarely come across criticism.  "I had an interesting chat with a couple of women not long ago while out walking," he said. "As they approached they had been discussing whether I was actually naked or not, until I got quite close and they decided that I definitely was.  "But they said it was not really a problem - I looked to them as if I was meant to be there, naked." Fellow hill walkers appear to be taking the situation in their stride and turn the other cheek to the naked ramblers. Ruairidh said: "Some people prefer to ignore me and that's fine." Bernard Boase, who has been hiking in the nude for the past five years, said: "I can only think of three times when I've been shouted at, once in the Lake District." Margaret Denny, regional spokeswoman for British Naturism said Cumbria and the North was popular with German and Dutch naturists who used the North Sea ferries to visit the area. The programme was filmed in July and August, perhaps to avoid too many goose-bumps. Derek Denny, who has been a naturist for 37 years, said: "When the weather is right we don't tend to wear clothes. We would not do it in the rain or in a blowing gale."  Which presumably rules out most of the year in Cumbria.
